Does pallet racking need to be bolted down?
Yes. Fixed pallet racking is anchored into the slab and generally needs engineering certification and inspection to Australian standards. Stackable stillages are not fixed to the building, so they avoid that step entirely.
How much weight can a pallet rack hold compared with a stillage?
Racking beams carry more per level, which is why very high bay warehouses use it. Stacked stillages carry 500 kg to 4,000 kg per frame and stack three high, which covers most tyre, parts, packaging and bulk goods operations without any structure.
Can stillages replace pallet racking completely?
In many operations, yes — particularly tyre shops, wholesale holding, production floors and 3PL space where stock and layout change. If you need six-level bay density with a reach truck fleet, racking is still the right answer, and stillages work alongside it.
How much space do you need between pallet racks?
Racking aisles are set by your forklift's turning circle and lift class, and they are fixed once the run is anchored. Stillage layouts use the same aisle logic but you can widen, narrow or re-block them at any time.
Is racking or stillage cheaper?
Racking looks cheaper per pallet position until you add install, certification, aisle commitment and the cost of empty bays. Stillages have no install cost, fold away when idle and can be added a few at a time as you grow.
Do you certify or install racking?
